Hearing that gravelly voice and seeing the honesty in his face and performance.įirst heard it when the movie Colombiana finished just last year on dvd, I liked it immediately. I remember the first time I cam across this on video. But I break down every time I hear it and can't turn it off. For me this song gives me a (probably false) sense of why. It unfortunately reminds me of my son who came to a place in his life where he became a drug addict and would hurt (cut) himself. The original is good but the Cash version just resonates deeper with me. Johnny Cash's version is still a great song but in my opinion is not above the original. It is faint and drowned out by the noise around it but it is still there underneath it all. It is about the only hopeful line in the song. The last line " I would find a way" represents hope. Also I always liked how in the original the background music gets louder right at the last line and drowns it out. Yet changing the lyric to crown of thorns invokes a completely different image.
The song is sung from the perspective of someone who is in a very low place emotionally. I wear this crown of thorns does not fit the song. My biggest problem has always been a simple change of a lyric he made. Honestly I always hate when Cash's version makes lists over the original. The music, content, tone, and Amy's voice combine to create a song that will last for ages. Hands down the most haunting and beautiful song ever written/performed. Her voice mixes with the piano to dreary a euphony of sadness. This is make you cry every time, eveytime and every time!Īmy Lee's voice is beautifully haunted as she sings about a loved one who won't leave her alone after their death. Jackie's Nella Fantasia is really so good but My Immortal is so very very sad. A haunting melody accompanied with an almost overwhelming sense of loss and grief, along with the piano, and you have the perfect expressive song that still lingers in your heart afterwards. While many consider it to be lazily written, I understand the true meaning of the words, and the emotions evoked in this song.
Amy Lee is an amazing vocalist, and her songs reflect on the true tragedy of life. Such a beautifully sad, heart-wrenching song.
